First city break of 2015 - Dublin! Part one

So back in 2014 - I believe it was around November.  My aunt Jojo, got an email from RyanAir.  They were having a sale on their already budget fares.  We decided to take advantage of this fantastic offer & fly to Dublin for £30 return!  Wow.  I know.  I thought it was too good to be true.  January seemed a great time to go just after New Year (sales).  The dates we booked to fly 10/1/2015 - 12/1/2015 a Saturday to Monday.

The next step was to find somewhere to stay.  I have heard from so many people that Dublin is a very expensive city break..eek, was the flights the cheapest part?  Um, no, using the awesome search engine www.laterooms.com I found a fantastic bargain.  For £106 for the two nights, we booked ourselves into the Jury's Inn Parnell Street.  That was around £25 each per night.  This did not included breakfast, as I tend to enjoy roaming around and seeing what the city has to offer.

To be completely honest Jojo & I hardly did any real research into the city break.  It actually was slightly ignorant of me but I was ill with the flu over Christmas and New Year, so I use that as an excuse.  However, this city was full of charm and surprises.

We had to start off early, setting the alarm for 5am, out the door for 5:30 am.  Yikes!!! But I was excited and honestly a tiny bit scared.  I'm not a nervous flyer but it was so very windy & apparently many flights has been cancelled over the last few days.  The flight was 8:05 am and only took us 40 minutes.  So we flew in a gale.  I was terrified on take-off as the plane was all over the place.  Dipping and shaking but we got to Dublin quickly and safely.  Jojo laughs at my terrified face!  I guess we will always remember our budget trip with a big smile and laugh at my expense 😂😂

Here are some snaps from the flight (as I luckily bagged a window seat- I just love clouds)

Just after take-off.

Using Instagram (@cherryblossom313)  how pretty is this sunrise?

Getting closer to Ireland

First sight of Dublin.  The beautiful Sunshine ☀️ Yet bitterly cold ⛄️❄️

The airport was massive but a breeze to get through.  We only took hand luggage so no waiting around the carousel.  As soon as we got outside, there was a Aircoach there waiting, we quickly bought a ticket (return €12) from the little kiosk set up by the exit door of the airport.

The coach was warm, service very good, clean, quick and efficient.  We got off at O'Connell street, little did we know that our hotel was much closer than we realised.  Literally about 5 minutes flat walk.

Our hotel was the Jury's Inn Parnell street.  This was on the corner, so pretty...

From here the hotel is 1 minute walk.  Outside the hotel, there are several pubs, restaurants, shopping mall and Tesco.  I love to buy chocolates and snacks from there to munch on & a big bottle of water (the time I got ripped off in London paying £4.50 for a bottle of water in a hotel! 😡😤)

The staff were so helpful.  As we arrived there before 10am and check in was supposed to be after 2pm.  The lovely lady on reception said she would see if there was a room available (we were just looking for somewhere to leave our simple hand luggage) lucky us - there was a room available.  So happy and exciting.

The hotel was superb, so clean and warm.

A simple photo of the twin room:

As we were starving, we decided to explore and walk down O'Connell street and along the river.  We saw a small riverside restaurant and had some breakfast there.  It was nothing too fancy but filled a gap.  While in the restaurant we were deciding what to do.  It was very fun to be spontaneous.  I do wish I was more of a planner by nature but we should all be happy with who we are.

Pretty Victorian style of O'Connell street.

After walking by the Liffey river (windy is an understatement) we decided to go with our plan of travelling on the sightseeing bus.  This is the main reason we decided not to walk around everywhere (our initial plan)

Looking really glamorous in my #selfie

Windy selfie ❄️🌀💙⛄️

River Liffey

Jojo and I decided to use the Dublin City sightseeing bus.  The big red double-decker bus.  We went to the shop on O'Connell street.  As we also wanted to go to the Guinness Factory we got a great deal.  €37 for a two-day pass of unlimited travel around Dublin on the red or blue route.  A ticket for the Guinness factory (with a token for a free pint) the ticket also includes money off many things in Dublin.  Some pubs/restaurants can give you 2-for-1 on meals... Plus we also got a free Irish coffee at O'Sullivans pub near Trinity college.

The bus drivers are so jolly and informative, it was a great way to learn facts about Dublin City, life and history.

After riding around for a bit, we got off at the Guinness Storehouse.  This is a must.  I never really liked Guinness (I worked in a pub during my late teens/early twenties) but this was so awesome.  We did he self-guided tour.  I love going at my own pace.  So much to do in there, reading all the methods, the history... Took so many photos...

9000 year lease signer by Arthur Guinness as you walk into the entrance.

I found it very cold inside so wrap up if you ever go there in the winter.  But so fascinating.

Touching the barley... So much of it!

Water from the Wicklow mountains (I believe) this was beautiful and as you can see you can walk behind it and under it.  It flows above a glass ceiling so pretty to watch it flowing above you.

Sorry for the bad photo, but this was in the tasting room.  The lighting was low, but if you can make it out, it's a shot glass shaped like a pint glass.  Filled with Guinness.  In the first room, you are in a bar (quite a few of you) this room is filled with barrels giving off some steamy aroma of what is inside Guinness.  Once they explain each ingredient they then ask you to grab your little Guinness shot, but not to drink it as you have to go into the next room (with low lighting).  In the next room it feels like you are in the 1800s with the old paintings on the wall.  You are told how to stand and hold the glass before ingesting it.  I must admit it was delicious, felt so smooth with a really rich taste.

Moving on, we then checked out some advertising and bits and pieces of machinery.

I really liked this advert 😁 so funny with the crab!

At this point Jojo and I knew the Guinness was tasty and decided to hot foot it to the seventh floor- the gravity bar. With 360 degree views of Dublin! It was so incredible.

We used the token that came with the ticket, so busy up there but served straight away.  The atmosphere was amazing and the Guinness we were drinking was no less than 2 days old.  I took many pictures up in the gravity bar.  Some silly drinking selfies and also of the glorious view of the blue sky over beautiful Dublin... Plus, a very gorgeous sunset.  A silly fact, Guinness is actually ruby red and not black.  Who knew?

Also, as we enjoyed the Guinness so much and the atmosphere + view was superb, we decided to have another.  Quick advice, go down to floor 5 (gravity bar is on floor 7) go to the bar and buy your Guinness (or any drink) there, the Guinness was €5.00 which is a pretty good price for a city.

As you can see from the photos, it is easy to see why we stayed up there.

So merry.

Ha ha our faces are so funny! But the drink was yummy! This is our second pint.

Gorgeous sunset.

Super pretty views.

End of part one!

Good night and happy Sunday! 😘

So why Blue Lagoon?

So you are probably wondering why Blue Lagoon Adventures, right?  Well, I guess it will be good to write it down, also for myself (to remember in many years time).

Firstly, not sure if you know but I love the movie titled "The Blue Lagoon" starring Brooke Shields (she is so young, natural and pretty).  The film is from 1980, so way before I was born, however I took a punt while in ASDA one day.  Browsing the DVD section, I cam across this DVD for £3.  It looked very interesting and I honestly thought it was not exactly breaking the bank!

film Got this pic from Amazon website

The movie is one of my favorites as I love that it is so simple.  It is very sweet and innocent.  Even the clothing and the unkempt hair is cool.  I like the story line.  Some kids stranded on an island, not knowing much about life but learning along the way.  It is a coming-of-age story.  Also, just my opinion but it shows how we can actually live simply and be happy.  They have nothing on the island, they seem happy as there is no major bad people on the island with the,  It is just that they are alone.  But all they have is love and each other, until they are rescued (plus they have a baby).

It is just like my little life.  Milo is my everything.  I never knew I could feel like that about something but I honestly love him to bits.  He is so special to me.  I love my family & Milo is part of that.

The other reasons for Blue Lagoon, could be that it rain enough here in Wales, that we could be considered blue.  Especially when you watch the BBC weather.  Huge Blue patch over the UK!

Plus, I want to go to the Blue Lagoon in many countries.  Malta & Iceland especially.

Iceland (picture from https://geolocation.ws/v/P/61832906/blue-lagoon-suurnes-iceland/en )

The colours are just so impressive.  I really love the colour turquoise.  It is my birthstone too.  Lucky me!

Through a google search I have found there is a blue lagoon in Wales too.  I must put that down as a future stop some time in the near future.

Time to play with Milo and rub his little belly.  :)

A chilled out Sunday

Well, I know it is Tuesday, I'm a little late chatting about Sunday, right?

But I just could not resist sharing a few snaps of the walk I did.  The walk was simple & I was accompanied by my aunt Jojo.  We actually travelled to Dublin together... But I will share all that next post.

We took a small stroll from Bedwas to Caerphilly to have a day out in the fresh winter air.  It was a crisp dry day thankfully.  And well, you can see from my photo how lovely it was!

How pretty is Caerphilly castle?  Plus what a glorious day it was.  Just a little info.  The castle is Norman and was rebuilt in the 1950s.  A closer look will show you where the bricks/stone are different.  The stone is the very old foundations.  Considering it was built around 1272, I think it is incredible.  Plus the restoration work was amazingly well done.

I always enjoy walking around here, especially on a pretty day.  Shall have to dig out some pics from around 3/4 years ago with some snow on the castle & it's surroundings.  If you ever do come to visit Wales, Caerphilly is just north of Cardiff.  You can get a bus easily from Cardiff or catch the train ( I find the train much easier) although a return will set you back between £6-7 which is not cheap but 3 or more people can get a group save.

it is worth seeing at least once in your life, so many stories over time.  Imagine this has stood proudly in the town centre for many centuries.

Also, there are many wild ducks, geese and swans around the moat area.  These little buggers are very greedy and can hear the rustle of bread in a bag from a mile off.  They will all be swarming around you so be warned.  But they are very beautiful to see and photograph.  If only I had a nice DSLR camera to take such pleasant pics rather than my iPhone.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my simple Sunday.

Have a great evening wherever you are.  If you ever have any questions, please feel free to leave a line.

Out walking my beautiful Labby Milo

Firstly a big welcome to my blog.

Just thought I would start the blog to catalogue my little journey through life. More for myself to look back & reflect.
I am hoping to update my blog as much as possible.  I want to add in past events of travel, to share the experience with everyone but to also treat it as a journal.  Hopefully, I will be able to add pictures of my walks around Wales (where I live) with my beautiful Milo + my family & friends.
Then also add in any art projects, DIY and sewing attempts too.  As it is a sort-of journal, I want to add as many photos and details as possible, fingers crossed it won't be too cluttered.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading as much as I will enjoy reflecting...

Meet Milo, my 18 month old Chocolate Labrador.  Cheeky little bear!

He has his own instagram page... feel free to follow him @chocolatefox13

Today, we went out for a walk.  I live in a small village called Bedwas, just outside Caerphilly in Wales (UK).  It is a great place to live as we are in a little valley surrounded by mountains.  So many great places to walk.  Although it does rain (actually quite a lot in fact!) so Milo loves all the really boggy, muddy paths we get to walk along to get to the fields on the mountain side.

I enjoy walking up there as often as possible.  It was part of a New Year resolution to walk more (I know I already do, but I want to try even more).  My mother (& father - who is away working in India) always walk Milo but I do not always tag along on the adventures.

So back to today.  It was actually very treacherous outside today.  As we had a light spatter of snow overnight + then it froze when the temperature dipped well below zero (oh the joys of winter! he he).  Had to put some old walking boots on and then try not to look like Bambi on the pavements.  The pavements were slippery like giant sheets of ice.  I know many places have much worse winters, however I am not too great with them (The UK actually usually has mild winters compared to many other Northern European countries) but I was also born + grew up in South Africa.  So the first part of my life had no experience with icy pavements at all.

Here is a little snap of the slightly less icy path.  I was too scared to get my iphone out while braving the ice covered pavements.

The mountain path that we regularly take.  Very icy indeed.

A quick iphone snap of the frost/ frozen snow covered grass.  So much fun to walk on this crunchy stuff.

This is the pretty, icy and boggy field.  It is one of Milo's favourite places, where he can wriggle around on his back!

Milo in all his mischief :)

I have a bit of a thing for nature photography, which I regularly post to Instagram.

Milo chops having a blast running around.

As I said above, Milo actually has many names.  I call him so many he must suffer from multiple-personalities.  Ha ha.

I call him Milo-fancypants, Moochacho, Moochi, Milo-chops, Mr. Milo, Milo sunshine, Milo sausage, Sos; then finally little Sossi.  I guess I will come up with more in his hopefully long life.  He is my little star and I treasure him so much.

Here is a panorama photo of the valley of Caerphilly.  Bedwas is straight below us.  I love where I live.  It makes me very happy - but I also enjoy exploring the world too.

It is so pretty + unedited or as they say on Instagram #nofilter

This last picture was taken on my iphone (and edited with IG) It is of an old church in Bedwas.  Called St Barrwg, I believe it was built in the 12th Century appearing in historical records around 1102 (Wikipedia).

Isn't it really pretty?  And so old.  I bet those walls have seen so many things and heard some many things.  I love to look at it and think of how many people have stood in that spot admiring it over the years.  It has been going through massive renovation & so glad the scaffolding is gone.

Hopefully, I will add some details about my recent trip to Dublin.  I hope to do so tomorrow.

Also, check out my instagram ( @cherryblossom313 ) for many pictures over the last year or two.

Have a superb evening (or day) wherever you are in the world.

Biggest of hugs,
Rachel
